The No. 23 New Mexico State volleyball team heads to Champaign, Ill. to participate in the 2008 State Farm Illini Classic this weekend. The Aggies take on No. 11 Oregon in the first match of the season, Friday, Aug. 29 at 3:30 p.m. (MST). On Saturday, Aug. 30, NMSU has two matches with the first against host team, Illinois at 9:00 a.m. (MST), while the second match will feature the Aggies going up against North Carolina at 6:00 p.m. (MST). AGGIES ON THE AIR All three matches this week will be broadcast on the radio at KSNM AM 570 with Kyle Doperalski giving the play-by-play action. Live stats will also be available on the internet at www.nmstatesports.com, while live video will be also be available for fans on the Illinois website (www.fightingillini.com) for a fee of $6.95. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The nationally ranked New Mexico State volleyball team invites all Aggie fans to come out and honor the first ever Aggie Volleyball Legends that will be inducted during the match versus No. 3 Texas at the Pan American Center, Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. The first inductees include Alane Pierce-Stutzman, who played from 1983-86, Vanessa White-Johnson, who played from 1988-91, and Maria Roth, who played from 1991-95. Head coach Mike Jordan now has a tradition of winning and knows that these student-athletes are a few of the ones who got that tradition going. "I'm happy for the three women chosen to be inducted, they are all very deserving," Jordan said. "They represent a different period in NMSU volleyball am I'm excited that we're recognizing the contributions of some very deserving women." LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The No. 23 New Mexico State volleyball team defeated the NMSU Alumni 4-0 at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M., Saturday, August 23. The Aggies, led by senior Lindsey Yon (San Antonio, Texas), won 25-14, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17 in front of a great NMSU crowd. Head coach Mike Jordan was pleased with the effort his team gave and was pleased with the turnout of the event. "I think we're working very hard at practice, but at this point we have to pay close attention to detail," Jordan said. "Our team has to become more confident and we still need to get ready to play." Yon slammed down 12 kills on 25 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. She also had nine digs and one service ace. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Horizon Air Summer Series announced that New Mexico State baseball player Jeff Farnham earned 2008 Horizon Air Summer Series All-Series baseball honors, Wednesday, Aug. 20. Farnham (Las Vegas, Nev.), now a senior at NMSU, played catcher for the Santa Maria Packers this summer. He played in 35 games, starting 29 of those games and hit .336 on the year with 38 hits and four doubles. "It was a good summer and it was enjoyable hitting with a wood bat," Farnham said. "I also caught for some really pitchers, which really helped me out." Farnham was second on the Packers in batting average and helped the team to a 30-19 record in the summer league. His .457 on-base percentage was also second on the team while he had 24 RBI on the season. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team came in ranked at No. 23 according to the 2008 CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll that was released Tuesday, Aug. 19. The Aggies, who finished the 2007 season with a 26-6 record, received 229 votes for the No. 23 ranking. NMSU ended the 2007 season No. 21 after reaching the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season. Head coach Mike Jordan knows the kind of potential his team has and hopes his team proves that potential. "It's nice that a lot of coaches think we have a pretty good program and it's definitely a positive," Jordan said. GALLUP, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team has completed six days of its scheduled eight-day training camp in Gallup, N.M. as the Aggies are preparing for the upcoming 2008 season. After holding two practices Sunday along with a free kid's camp, NMSU hit the practice field just once on Monday afternoon at Gallup Public School Stadium.

LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico State athletics department announced Friday that cowbells will become part of the game-day environment at Aggie Memorial Stadium for the 2008 season. The campaign titled, Bring It-Ring It, seeks to create a new interactive tradition for NMSU home football games. The Bring It-Ring It campaign is designed to create a new tradition for Aggie football fans, a fun interactive tool, a better home-field advantage and an identity for Aggie fans across the region. "We are very pleased to introduce this new interactive tradition for NMSU football fans," said associate athletic director Steve Macy. "In consultation with the NMSU Heritage Committee, we believe that the introduction of cowbells to our game-day experience closely aligns with the university's history and our desire to create a better home-game atmosphere." GALLUP, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team completed its second day of fall training camp at Gallup Public School Stadium Thursday morning as the Aggies are preparing for their 113th season of football. NMSU arrived in Gallup on Tuesday and then held their first of four two-a-day practices on Wednesday. Today the Aggies had just the one morning practice, but the rest of the day is still filled with position meetings, film sessions and weight training sessions. In the Aggies' morning practice Thursday, the team went for just a little over two hours. They started out with position drills before heading into some special teams work. After that the offensive worked on their pass and run game. Then the team came together for a 25 minute scripted scrimmage where they went up and down the field against each other. The Aggie defense has been very impressive so far in camp, coming out in practice with lots of excitement

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - AggieVision is telecasting over 40 live events in the 2008-09 academic year, including eight (8) volleyball games and seven (7) football games this fall. The eight volleyball games are the most ever for an NMSU volleyball squad. In addition to the fall events, AggieVision is also producing and distributing eight (8) women's basketball games, 14 men's basketball games, four (4) softball games and four (4) baseball games, as well as football and men's basketball coach's shows. The games and coach's shows are widely distributed across the region and include Comcast-Las Cruces, Comcast-Albuquerque, Comcast-Gallup, Comcast-Santa Fe, Time Warner-El Paso, Altitude Sports and Entertainment, and FSN-Arizona. LAS CRUCES, N.M.-- Many creditable coaches have said that athletes are not made during the season, but during the summer. The summer months are a time to improve skills, get stronger and faster, work on the mental approach or just shore up things that did not go so well the previous season. The New Mexico State softball team has taken this advice and is running with it. In the sweltering heat of Las Cruces, you can drive by the NMSU softball complex and see more than a half-dozen of the players' cars sitting in the parking lot. LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico State men's and women's tennis teams were both named to the 2008 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team lists that were released Friday, Aug. 8. The men's team had four athletes honored as ITA Scholar Athletes while the women's team had an NCAA-leading eight scholar athletes. Several Division I women's teams had seven student-athletes receive the scholar athlete award, but the eight Aggies honored were the most in the country and it set a school record. Since the inception for the ITA All-Academic awards in 2002, the men's team has earned all-academic team honors three times. The women's team has set the standard for academic and athletic excellence, as they have been named to the all-academic team list in seven out of the eight seasons in the awards history.
